Spotlights on Rene Groen

Rene Groen's football career ended at the age of 28.

His career started at the age of 17, when coach Foppe de Haan signed him from Steenwijk. Rene Groen was an injury-sensitive defender, his career became a nightmare when he got injured just a couple of days before the cup final against Ajax in 1993. In the match against Haarlem at home, Haarlem player Piet Keur fell on his knee, so that he torned his ligaments.

He started his revalidation in 1994, but this failed. Rene Groen was an important asset of SC Heerenveen's defence. The gifted defender did not need harsh power, but challenged strikers with his technique and good judgement. In 1991/1992, Rene Groen was the player of the year of SC Heerenveen.

After his professional career, Rene Groen played a couple of years with the amateurs Steenwijk. In 2000, he defenitely ended his playing career. Again, his knee was the reason to quit.

At the moment he is a scout for SC Heerenveen. We hope we will see him as a trainer in the future. With his experience and judgement he would be a great coach.
