This
player made his break though halfway the eighties at SC
Heerenveen. He grew out to be the public's most
favourite player those days. Three times he was declared
player of the year.
Maarten
de Jong was one of the best repossesers of the ball on the
Durch football fields. A speciality which cost him a lot
of yellow cards. He has the most but one in the all time
score list. Only Cor Lems, who collected 70 in his career,
was booked more than him. But he was never mean and
if he was booked he accepted the penalty with grace. He
was the engine of the team. One incident stands out. The
ball was bound for goal but de Jong caught it. As he stood
up he got the red card of course. He shook hands with the
ref and left the field under rapturous applause. The
penalty was converted though...
Due
to his funny behaviour an the field and his long stay
in the first team he got the nickname "Mister SC
Heerenveen", a title he fully deserved. In his later
days he played for FC Groningen, our neighbours. And as a
Groningenplayer he played two times in the Abe
Lenstrastadium.
These
days he runs a sports shop in Gorredijk and furthermore he
analyses home games for the Heerenveen TV-station.
